A rather thoughtful post

Jacob seems absolutely huge to me... this must be because my girls were both very tiny as babies (and are still rather tiny today). Well, at Jake's 4 month well-visit his height was 24 1/2 inches and weight at about 14 1/2 lbs. The doctor says this puts him in the 50th %ile for both. So, there you go - in my eyes, he is a monster baby, but it turns out he is just where he should be (if that can really be measured). I've never had a baby that was in the 50th- they've always been 10th or smaller. So this is new! :) I just LOVE my little Jake. He is very good natured and happy. He is extremely quick to smile and always a flirt (especially at church to whoever is sitting behind us). He is a great sleeper - he's down to one feeding during the night (at 1 or 2 am), which is pretty good, considering he goes to bed at 5:30 and wakes up for the day at 6:30. He's also so cute in his crib or playpen - he rarely cries for me when he gets up from a nap - I often will find him after his nap just happily playing with his feet or sucking on his fingers. What a wonderful little boy he is! I give him exorbitant numbers of kisses each day - plus all the kisses and loves he gets from his sisters and daddy. He's a lucky boy, I guess - but I really feel like the lucky one... he's just a joy. So, even though I whine and complain about how hard having 3 kids is... I am also very happy because my kids are great. :)

I've been keeping up the bread-making and it's getting easier and easier. We make 2 loaves on Mondays and 2 more on Thursdays and that gets us through the week just great. At first I felt like I was slaving away in the kitchen to get bread made, but now I have all the ingredients I use in one place in my cupboard, so I pull them out quick, measure it all out into my mixer and then it's just a matter of waiting for it to rise a couple times - during which I do other things. And the kids love to watch and help and we're all learning quite a bit as we go. I even made tortillas for the first time last week and it was surprisingly successful! And I made blueberry jam over the weekend. Plus we've had many rounds of cookie making... mmm... Hello - My new name is Little Susie Homemaker. :) I don't know what it is lately, but I am really enjoying the baking and cooking and getting a hold of my inner mommy skillz. Part of it may be out of necessity as we adjust to our new 'residency salary', but oddly I am also really enjoying living on our modest budget and being surprised at how far a small amount of money can stretch. I feel like the things I'm learning and experiencing right now will help me throughout the rest of my life. Things are good... life is good. I'd love to hear thoughts from you good friends out there going through residency and how it's shaping you as a mom.

I'm being very reflective this evening, wouldn't you say? It must be that Ben is away at work and the kids are in bed, and I have a lot on my mind. :)

  1. Aww, I'm so happy to hear that Jacob is being so nice to his mommy :) 3rd time is the charm! Although all of your kids have been total sweethearts. Way to go on the baking skills sistah! I would love to bake but I know I would just eat it all myself. I can't contain myself when it comes to baked goods.
    Miss you tons!

  4. I love that your making all this stuff from scratch. I just started a little too and love it. It makes me feel so much more accomplished than running to the store. Baby food is next on your list! :) Did you make it for the girls? I make ALL of Mile's food. I love doing it and its sooo cheap!
I just started making flour tortillas too and they are soooo good! and so easy. I can make like 12 in about 5 minutes. Do you guys like enchiladas?? I make a homemade red enchilada sauce that is to die for! :)

  6. Susan, someday I want to be like you. I have just one kid, and being pregnant with this second seems so hard! :) I would also love to see your bread and tortilla recipes if you don't mind posting them. Jake sure is a cutie. Keep being domestic!

  7. Hooray for a pleasant little boy! With 3 young ones at home it's a blessing that he's not a crabby baby. Some are, and It's tough on the moms.
Baking from scratch and learning to budget is an important skill, especially with the economy the way it is. Everyone should learn to do it. Your family will appreciate the better tasting food too.
    I'm proud of you Sue.

  8. Yout little boy is so cute. I am glad he is so good for you. When my little boy came after my two girls I couldn't believe what a good little boy he he was. He was a charmer as a baby and he is still a charmer as a toddler. I just think there is something about little boys. They know how to melt there moms heart.
You had asked when I am due. I am having a c-section on Aug. 28, so just a couple of weeks. Loves

  11. Well Hello Susie Homemaker:) Can I have a bite of some bread with some yummy jam. YUMMY> IM sorry that I always talk about 3 being crazy. I LOVE having 3 too:)

OK Im totally with you in every way with residency! IM really loving this part of my life right now and even though I feel myself grow. I am so grateful for this phase of my life. Im really loving it. I dont know what it is buy lately I feel so rewarded with my calling in life as a mom. I feel like Heavenly Father is proud of me. :) ( a little cheesey?) But I feel that since LIFE is so CRAZY right now and Michael is always gone it makes me be more grounded. And the no money thing... I don't know what it is. We have LESS money now then as we were as students- no free stuff but Im do
ing good with stretching our dime. ( Which I NEVER DID BEFORE!) Ok- I could go on and on. (just woke up)

But I do have to say Susan... You have always been a squared a way mom. I think residency just makes you feel proud that your really a squared a way mom cuz your really doing it BY YOURSELF!!!! I have always admired you for it. Miss you.

  12. good for you! it's so true that life is tighter in residency than school, isn't it? i'm so impressed that you are making all your own bread (and all the other yummy stuff you mentioned). And Jacob is such a doll! Everytime i see pictures of him it makes me want to smile. He looks a lot like his mommy.

  15. Such little cuties you have. I'm having the reverse experience with my baby. The older ones were chunks and I keep pulling out clothes cause I'm sure he's grown into them by now. Nope, he's my littlest. When I went to the doc he's 50% for weight so apparently just "normal" but I think teeny. And I want the recipes too. Bread intimidates me but maybe if you walk us through it.
