Exploring our roots...

This week Ben has been doing Neurology "night float", so he goes to work all night and then is home during the day. It's been strange, because a lot of the nights Ben has gotten a lot of sleep while at the hospital (if they don't have patients that need to be seen). So, then he comes home and doesn't necessarily have to sleep during the day... this obviously poses a problem if he's then up all night busy with patients the next night, but thankfully he'll be all done with these backwards shifts by tomorrow morning. Today was great because last night he got a full night's sleep even though he was on the clock at the hospital... and a well-rested daddy is a fun daddy... so we played! I stopped by the library and got a culture pass to the Heard Museum - we were really impressed by this museum! It had a surprising amount of activities that the kids could do, and we enjoyed all the Native American exhibits. My family is part Chinook Indian so it was fun to see the section they had devoted to Pacific Northwest Native American tribes.

Some activities we did included...

Beading and weaving

Puzzles

Coloring

Pipe cleaner art

Canoeing

and Felt animal gathering

I love how Jake put the museum sticker on his forehead and then refused to remove it through most of our museum visit

My fancy new bag that Emma and Ben made for me. Aren't you jealous? I know you want one.

Ooo! See?! Chinook art!!

Ben decided that this kachina doll reminded him of Jake... maybe because of the wide head and overall hairiness

And this one reminds him of Becca... because of the pig tails :)

Jake thought that these made great boats

Emma demonstrated their proper use :)

Isn't Ben such a great daddy?! He did ALL the activities with the kids

The girls are really into "thumbs up!" lately

Ben led the girls in a leaf race down the water feature. Becca won.

While the kids and I were in Utah, Ben went with his family over the Fourth of July weekend to this really fun ice cream/soda shop in downtown Phoenix. He was all excited to take us there after we were finished up at the Heard Museum.

Can you tell the girls enjoyed their ice cream?! :)

  1. That's a very nice museum.
BTW, we also have a lot of Lakota. Those Native Americans wound up with some pasty white descendants.
My mom recently asked me to tell you about a gg grandmother named Marie Aoise (IOWA). She walked form St Louis Misouria with the Astor party of Astorians to the west coast Oregon territory. Later fur traders and Indian people called her 'Walks Far Woman'. Mom said this is a historic name. She walked with two little boys in tow. John Babtiste age 3 and Paul age 2. She was expecting. That baby died 2 days after birth.
Thanks for the opportunity to share that info.
You've got me wanting ice cream now. If we want a really creamy cone we have to make our own or drive to the next county.
Hey, tomorrow is Pioneer Day in Utah. We may do a little hike up Sugar loaf peak in Albion Basin. At the very least we will go see secret lake. That's also just up at the top of our canyon.
Tell the kids about Pioneer Day. It's part of their heritage. They have family that walked across the plains and even founded many parts of Utah. We have exceptional people on both family lines.

  2. Nice history lesson, lots of Native-Americana in AZ. Susan, there is some NA Fam History work for you to work on as soon as Sarah completes the baptisms.

Plus.. Ben knows his soda, I would think there must be some similar places here in Utah, given the large soda pop drinker population. I'll check and see, maybe will make a post on www.dadoo1.blogspot.com!

  3. Your Jake reminds me of my Cole. They have adorable grins with just a few teeth and seem to always be into something. It looks like you guys are always having fun! Oh and growing up - I never put 2 and 2 together that your birthday was on 7-11. It's got to be one of the coolest days of the year! Free slurpees - who wouldn't want a birthday then?!

  4. Hey Charis! :) Ben is doing Internal Medicine. After he finishes up 2 more years of residency he wants to do another 3 years of fellowship to specialize in Pulmonary Critical Care... so that he can work in the ICU treating patients with various lung illnesses. Sigh. Still a ways to go! :) But thankfully he's enjoying residency alright, so we're trying to be happy through the process. hehe.

  5. Ah yes! Pipe cleaner art. One of the great past times of the native american people.
