Our final day in New York City - I was sad already that we were to our last day - it went by so quickly, but we also felt like we had seen so much. We filled our last day with odds and ends we didn't get a chance to do earlier in the week. But first, a note about the subways... we learned that they are often doing maintenance on the subway lines during the weekends. We felt pretty confident in our subway map reading ability and had yet to hop on the wrong one or get off sooner than we meant. But then Saturday came, and our map was obsolete, so we were left to figure out the boards full of maintenance related subway schedule changes to verify we knew where we were going. It was confusing, and it meant extra time hanging around in the not so nice smelling subway stations...
Even though the subway stops were usually uncomfortably warm, dirty, and unpleasant smelling, there were parts that we quite lovely... such as the tiling work at the Museum of Natural History stop...
Going to this museum was kind of a last minute decision and we hadn't really planned a lot of time to stay there. We definitely did not see all of it, but what we did see was awesome! I've learned that by going to museums without little kids, you can actually spend time reading stuff and learning about things. Who would have thought?! :)
I am chubby on the sun...
Wow! A really big Native American canoe!
After our museum morning, it was time for lunch so we found our way to the nearest candy store ;)
We selected a variety of delicious treats... which we later ended up eating much of on our airplane flight home the next day...
Then to Serendipity for lunch! It was eclectic and fun, with delicious food. And the frozen hot chocolate is a must...
Next we headed back to Central Park and found ourselves some bikes to rent for a couple of hours - First we rode them to Bethesda Fountain. We discovered you can rent row boats at the lake there too and they also have a nice looking boathouse restaurant. I felt like at every turn we were finding more fun things to do that we just didn't have time for... I guess we'll have to go back!
We had seen a cool looking food truck on our first day in Central Park, but we were just on our way to lunch, so we didn't partake. :) But we rode our bikes to find it again. We got a waffle with ice cream, strawberries, and chocolate sauce on it - yum! It was especially delicious. We learned that these guys were featured on Bobby Flay's Throwdown and won! Did I mention that between San Francisco and then New York, we ate like kings and queens! Everywhere we went the food was amazing!
The bike riding might have been my favorite thing we did while in New York. It was also a great workout!
The day was nearing an end, so we settled on Rockefeller Center to be our last stop for the day. I did not see Tina Fey...
We ate dinner at the Rock Center Cafe. Once again, the food was amazing. Especially our NY cheesecake...
The next morning we were up bright and early for our 7am flight back to Utah. I can't say enough what a treat this was to spend 5 whole days alone with my Ben. We had our 10 year anniversary a few months ago in March, but we looked at this as our anniversary trip. It was perfect. And now I see why so many people say they love New York City. :)
But wait there's more vacation posts to come... stay tuned! :)

I was PG with you when your dad and I did the subways in N.Y. We came out in the wrong part of town. It was a really dirty and scary place. We had to walk a couple of blocks to find our way back to the subway going out of there.
ReplyDeleteIt is easy to mess up with the subway, so you guys did good to not get lost.
You guys looked so relaxed in all of your pics. A little time away is good for the soul.
Well, it's 10:30 at night and Sarah and Stef just got back with our Sonic slushies. I'm tired.
